FAQs
What do you mean by “designing with paint?”
A graphic designer by training and profession, I approach my paintings as a design exercise. I use design principles such as composition, contrast, color, scale and positive/negative space to guide my decisions.
Are these digital?
No! Each is a unique work of art, painted by hand.
Do you first create them on a computer?
No! I start with an idea and build out the composition as I go.
Do you use AI to generate your paintings?
No! I use my head and my hands.
How do you get the edges so straight and clean?
I use a specialized masking tape to bound the area I want to paint, the same kind of tape that’s used to custom paint cars and motorcycles.
What is the medium?
Acrylic on canvas.
How long does it take to create one of these?
About 6 weeks on average for a large one.
Have you painted a shape other than triangles?
No not yet. I haven’t gotten tired of painting them so far.
What is a “stacked” canvas?
Its a term I made up: it means one canvas affixed on top of another.
Where did the idea of a "Stacked Canvas" come from?
In 1958 the American painter Jasper Johns did a painting entitled “Three Flags” where he “stacked" three canvases. Also, I like “experiential” works- where the viewer has an experience. As you view the painting from different angles you have a different perspective- and a different experience.
Can I get a painting with custom colors?
Yes! I can start with colors you specify and build a custom palate for a painting you commission.
How long have you been painting?
During college and my 47 years as a practicing graphic designer, I painted in watercolors figuratively, au plenair, and abstractly. I retired in 2024, pivoted to acrylics and took a class in "hard edge painting." The instructor suggested we paint with triangles at first in an intuitive style—meaning no preplanning. After so many years of working on design projects that required an intense amount of planning I loved the freedom.
